Stick Men: Let’s Thrak Again (Reel One)

Supergroup Stick Men (Tony Levin, Markus Reuter, Pat Mastelotto) are back with their first new album in a decade. The band is paying homage to King Crimson’s 1995 release Thrak. Interestingly, the album is being released in two versions, Reel One mixed by Stefano Castagna, and Reel Two mixed by Fabio Trentini. Per the press release they offer different mixes, alternate track sequences, and contrasting sonic perspectives that offer two distinct listening experiences. 

I’ve enjoyed Stick Men live on several occasions. Heavy, dissonant musical performances, full of pounding rhythms and intense riffing have always been great in a live setting. “Like We Did Last Summer� is heavy, dark, and chaotic. “Haggin Triptych� features an acoustic melodic intro, a welcome deviation before it hunkers down, but also provides more atmospheric moments at its conclusion. “Bash Machine� seems to push the bottom end a bit more which I like. The album certainly reflects its source of inspiration.

Have you ever bought an album that’s difficult to listen to from start to finish? Thoroughly impressive musically, but unfortunately the songs tend to blend, leading to ear fatigue. That’s my feeling, that the first three or four tracks are all I really need or want to hear. Such is the case with Let’s Thrak Again, but, if you have the chance, don’t miss them live!
