Doctor Doom: A Shadow Called Danger

I have not heard a lot of stoner metal/classic rock sounds from France but here is a band I cannot get out of my head. Hailing from Ariege, France, Doctor Doom formed in in 2011 by Jean-Laurent Pasquet (guitar, vocals) and former member, guitarist Jérémie Delattre. Rounding out the foursome are:

Sébastien Boutin Blomfield (bass)
Bertrand Legrand (guitar)
Michel Marcq (drums)

The band released their debut album titled The Seed We Have Sown in 2015 and their sophomore effort A Shadow Called Danger came out in 2022, and folks, this band is the real deal. Incorporating all that is great of ‘60s and ‘70s classic rock and with a dash of proto metal, A Shadow Called Danger is a fantastic listen. I hear bits of Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Wishbone Ash and Blue Oyster Cult and it all hangs together remarkably well beginning with the album opening “Comeback To Yourself�. Slowly picked notes slowly develop, the riffs crash and the tempo increases emanating a classic ‘70s heavy rock vibe recalling Blue Oyster Cult. With catchy riffs and vocals it is a fine beginning to the album. Next is “What They Are Trying To Sell� with its up-tempo riffs and huge drum sound before slowing down into eerie doominess recalling both Sabbath and B.O.C. The added organ recalls elements of Deep Purple making this a mandatory listen for lovers of anything ‘70s. The beginning of “Ride On� has a southern feel with its introspective acoustic guitar and soon the relaxing swampy groove eventually gives way to a ripping track ending guitar solo. The B.O.C. influenced “Connected By The Worst� and the catchy rhythms and chorus in “Hollow� are rooted in the band’s patented ‘70s hard rock style and are both melodic gems.

A Shadow Called Danger will be fine edition to any rock library, ideally suited for fans of the classic era. As for me, excuse me while I give this another spin!
