Finely Tuned Elephant: No Goats

Finely Tuned Elephant are a Canadian instrumental fusion quartet I somehow missed until now, thankfully No Goats came across my radar. Three things jumped out immediately: catchy tunes, serious chops, and guitarist Jordan Robinson, who feels like the band’s secret weapon.

“Gamblin’ Man� comes out swinging, Robinson tearing through a solo that practically demands multiple listens. Lugli’s electric keys push the track into that sweet spot where fusion feels both muscular and fun. “Moongazing in Tokyo� has a disco shimmer, the walking bassline and tight drum groove setting up a great keyboardguitar lift. “Thievous Raccoonus� is all energy, the band locks in, while Robinson’s whammy bar touches add personality, and the groove at the end hits exactly right.

The final stretch seals it: “Rush Hour� is frantic in the best way, and “No Goats� closes the album with beautiful guitar work and a band playing like they’re going for broke.

According to their site, this is the first record with the fully roadtested lineup. Alex Lugli’s keys are essential to the band’s sound, Iveglia and Robertson Orkish form a rhythm section that feels dialed in. No Goats kept pulling me back in, it’s a grower, and once it clicks, it really clicks.
