Düren, Wolfgang: Eyeless Dreams

Wolfgang Düren is a relatively unknown German artist who only released one album - Eyeless Dreams (1980). In the 1970s Düren played guitar in a few local bands before hooking up with Tangerine Dream in 1978, becoming a roadie for the band. He programmed the band’s sequencers for three years while touring throughout Europe and beyond and further developed his love for electronic music. This led to his solo album Eyeless Dreams. He would go on to form Waldorf Music in 1988, specializing in synthesizers.

It would stand to reason Eyeless Dreams would be influenced by Tangerine Dream and that is indeed the case. On the album Düren plays a variety of synths including - PPG wave computer 8-voice 360A, PPG computer sequencer 350, PPG modular system 300 series, PPG digital synthesizer 1020 and micro Moog.

The disc begins with the hypnotic title track with its trance-like sequencers and synths, swirling and shimmering in an alien-like soundscape. The sound breaks into a crisp and clean rhythm, propulsive and riveting over an underlying bed of synths, sometimes eerie and quite haunting. “Phila� builds languidly, slightly experimental with various percussion, presenting the listener cool sequenced sounds and interesting song dynamics. Certainly hypnotizing and definitely intriguing. The catchy synth chords on “904�, the cold and icy synths on “Proton� and “Eyeless Dream II�, enhanced with German narration provided by Bettina Weber are all worthy of deeper listens into the dark and cold abyss that is Eyeless Dreams.

Thank you MIG Music for making this obscure album available for all fans of Berlin School electronic music. Folks, this one is a keeper!
