Tohpati Ethnomission: Barong

Led by Indonesian guitarist Tohpati Ario Hutomo, Barong delivers a fusion sound that feels both rooted and forwardleaning. Traditional Indonesian elements weave naturally into the band’s jazzfusion attack, giving the music a character that’s instantly recognizable and refreshingly different.

The title track sets the tone right away, bursting with energy, driven by tight unison lines from guitar, bass, flute, and vibe tones. It’s an attentiongrabber, and a perfect introduction to the album’s sonic palette, which leans heavily on varied percussion textures that deepen the rhythmic identity of the music.

“Papua Dreams� showcases those percussive colors from the outset, paired with chantlike group vocals. Tohpati’s chordal work is interesting, and when he launches into his ripping solo, guitar fans will be fully on board.

Tohpati’s playing hits another level on “Penjor�. The closing runs are jawdropping; fluid, fiery, and executed with the kind of precision that makes you want to hear them again. Throughout the album, the flute becomes the secret sauce: it stands out early, but by the end you realize how seamlessly it blends with Tohpati’s guitar lines.

The closer, “Hunter�, might be the heaviest track here, and it’s a great example of the album’s stylistic blend, rock weight, fusion intricacy, and Indonesian melodic sensibility all working together. In truth, that’s the story of the entire record: a clever, cohesive mix of styles that never feels forced.
