Dey, Mohini: The Dey Way

Energy absolutely pours out of Dey’s second release, The Dey Way. The opening title track is an allout assault, driven by her rumbling slap bass while Gergo Borlai holds the line with his trademark precise drumming. Dey surrounds herself with elite players, and it shows. Bumblefoot adds his unmistakable guitar bite, and Dennis Chambers steps in for the aptly titled “Uncle Dennis,� delivering exactly the kind of rhythmic authority you’d hope for.

Jack Gardiner steals the spotlight on “Xtroverted Soul� with dazzling, hyperfluid guitar work, a player I definitely need to hear more from. The horn section injects even more punch into “Whammy,� proving that Dey isn’t afraid to stack intensity on top of intensity. Then she pivots beautifully on “Slappa Dey Bass,� creating space and atmosphere in a way that highlights another dimension of her writing. Daniel Szebenyi’s tasteful synth touches throughout the track add just the right amount of color.

Dey incorporates vocalizations across several tunes: for me, that’s the one minor drawback. The music is strong enough to stand on its own, and the vocals can feel unnecessary. That said, repeated listens help them settle into the texture rather than distract from it.

You want groove and punch, then “Uncle Dennis� is the one for you. This switches between funky and heavy seamlessly. As a followup to her debut, The Dey Way delivers in full: mindblowing musicianship, memorable compositions, and a relentless sense of momentum. Dey’s highoctane approach is exactly what keeps me coming back for more.
