Olgoj: A Place To Rest

Here is another new find for me. Coming out of Rennes, France we have the four piece band Olgoj and their debut album titled A Place To Rest. The band play their own form of alternative progressive rock highlighted by melodic vocals and interesting guitar parts, some being quite catchy. It is this memorability that makes A Place To Rest such an excellent disc, ensuring return spins again and again.

The band includes:
Samuel Anger (vocals, guitars, bass, arrangements)
Matthieu Noblet (drums, arrangements)
Ronan Bedo (bass)
Frederic Gablin (backing vocals)
With:
Klara Anger (backing vocals on “Collision�)

The opening track “Galaporella� offers up a nice slow burn with minor guitar chords, slightly off kilter and moody, combined with clean melodic vocals. The vocals do a great job providing the hook while the rest of the band create a progressive tinged soundscape dominated by excellent rhythmic guitar work. On “Second Skin� the sound is more serene before heavier riffs and distortion and complex drum patterns merge with subtle shifts in tone and tempo. Trippy atmospherics and liquid-like lead guitar highlight the excellent and progressive “Lakefloor� while the title track offers a quirky slice of low key atmospheric rock music with melodic vocal harmonies and interesting stop-starts while varying in mood and heaviness.

More outstanding tracks include the eclectic Crimson-esque “Frequencies & Everything� featuring a complex vocal arrangement and dynamic shifts in light and heavy and the groove heavy “Collision� where smart vocal harmonies, stuttering rhythms and great bass work remind me of a more progressive version of The Talking Heads.

Although I’ve name dropped a couple band names, Olgoj really does have their own unique sound making A Place To Rest an ideal album for progressive minded music fans across the board. As such, this is an album I can easily recommend.
