Lumnos: A Glimpse Through The Event Horizon

Lumnos is the alter ego of Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Putrefactus. Lumnos is billed as a black metal/ambient project which certainly had me intrigued to just what this music will actually bring. Also getting my attention is the title of the latest album A Glimpse Through The Event Horizon. Coming from a science background anything space related gets my imagination running in high gear. Especially the mysterious nature of black holes which forms the theme of the album.

The first track “Auroras Dance� is absolutely gorgeous with its sweeping yet delicate instrumentation, lush atmosphere, and deepening background growls. In the song’s second half the clean vocals take hold adding another melodic texture into the mix recalling latter day Anathema. Spellbinding stuff for sure. Crisp keyboards and electronics add a lovely beginning to “Reach the Unknown�, morphing into a dense tapestry of post metal with its perfectly placed backing growls and blackened screams intricately woven with melodic cleans. Another transfixing piece of music to wrap your head around. The shimmering and pulsating electronics of “Echoes of Singularity� with its choral voicings and lush synthesizers is another highly addictive track. At around the three minute mark the dense music returns along with deep growls, adding an intense atmosphere to the soundscape. The intriguing duet vocal delivery in the pleasant “Moondust & Stardust� and the cinematic and cosmic trip that is “The Endlessness Theory� end the album in fine style.

Although the songs do not differ to a large degree, the album’s forty minute running time ensures a tight and tidy turnaround with no filler to be found. A Glimpse Through The Event Horizon is as classy as atmospheric metal gets and easily earns a solid thumbs up from yours truly!
