Molinari, Fernando: Numen - EP

Fernando Molinari returns with Numen, a fivetrack blast of highoctane fusion that never lets up. At just 25 minutes, it’s a short ride, but “intensity” is absolutely the defining trait, every second is packed with precision, fire, and fearless musicianship. Molinari wrote, produced, and arranged the entire EP, making it clear he’s far more than a virtuoso bassist; he’s a full-spectrum creative force.

Marco Minnemann once again occupies the drum chair, and he’s a perfect match, relentless, intricate, and always pushing the band forward. The opener “Minerva” wastes zero time: razorsharp ensemble playing, blistering lines, and Andre Nieri delivering lead guitar work that borders on the outrageous. It’s a statement track.

“Netuno” keeps the throttle wide open. Molinari’s rattling, hyper-articulate bass tone slices through the mix whether he’s locking in with Nieri or stepping out on his own. Nieri’s solo around the 2:50 mark is one of the EP’s highlights, fluid, melodic, and technically jaw-dropping. Molinari’s metal influence is unmistakable, but it’s woven so naturally into his music.

“Mitra” shifts the palette with Joao Hanysz’s acoustic guitar adding a Spanish-inflected elegance. It’s a welcome breather that still maintains the EP’s forward momentum. Then comes “Gemina,” which simply detonates. The unison playing is absurdly tight, the kind of precision that makes you laugh out loud in disbelief. Chris Clark’s piano work is a revelation, especially when paired with Mariko Muranaka’s cello. Clark’s jazzy detour at the threeminute mark is a brilliant curveball that gives the track extra dimension.

The closer, “Marte,” is the EP’s heaviest track as Hanysz tears through with scorching guitar lines, and Molinari keeps is presence front and center.
