Dead Feathers: Full Circle

Forming in 2014, Chicago based Dead Feathers have released two full lengths thus far, All Is Lost (2019) and Full Circle (2023), plus a self-titled EP in 2016. I reviewed All Is Lost a few years ago and it is indeed an excellent disc. Fast forward to 2023 and their latest album Full Circle.

The band plays fuzzy, psychedelic rock often veering into dream-like realms and trippy guitar noodling. Each member is a fine player and the vocals of Marissa Welu are fantastic throughout. She has a powerful and melodic voice reminding mostly of Grace Slick. She should take that as a major complement.

The first track “Full Circle” has the band delving head first into heavy psychedelic rock with its sharp edged guitar riffs, galloping rhythms, psychedelic fuzz, and the strong vocals of Welu tying it all together with power and conviction. “Lightning” showcases liquid-like guitar and the blending of mellow and heavier realms where the band ramp of the intensity with a blistering guitar solo. I love how Dead Feathers effortlessly shift gears. “Daughters” begins in a calming fashion with a storm brewing underneath unleashed in the song’s second half where the music gears up into fiery psychedelic bliss. The ten minute “Robbery” ebbs and flows through cascading builds and is marked by excellent guitar work and strong vocals while the subdued “Galapagos” features pretty acoustic guitar and sublime vocals.

Dead Feathers is a band with no weak links, crafting seven delightful tracks that should have psychedelic rock fans jumping up for joy.

A Ripple Music release.
