Garrone, Anthony: OK, But Why?
 Garone is a modern-day renaissance man, a software developer, built a music community of 40,000+ subscribers (“Make Weird Music”) and a published author. His book “Failure to Fracture: Learning King Crimson’s Impossible Song” should give one a hint of the music they’ll hear on OK But Why?.
“Binge Master” hooks immediately, channeling both Adrian Belew and Robert Fripp with a vibe straight out of ’80s Crimson. By “Deathtrap,” the heaviness, energy, and Garone’s razorsharp guitar work are in full stride. “Dance” keeps the momentum going, dense, heavy, and lifted by Gabe Garone’s piano, which adds a welcome contrast to the guitar assault.
The title is begging to be used in the review, so here it comes…OK, but why the vocals? Three consecutive vocal tracks starting with “My Garden” shift the album’s feel in a way that doesn’t quite land. The Fripp-penned “Erudite Eyes” is a respectful nod to a hero, but the vocal stretch still feels like a detour. Thankfully, the funky “Pune” snaps everything back into place, powered by standout guitar work and Michael Manring’s always inventive bass. The "Concerto for Violin and Oboe" highlight more variety and chops.
Garone has quite a guest list with notable names such as Andy West (Dregs) and Michael Manring being featured on a few tracks. Garone is an impressive player and composer, the music is complex, tuneful, and adventurous, a very enjoyable listen.

Garrone, Anthony: OK, But Why?

“Because” is the perfect answer to the question asked in the title of guitarist, author, software developer and YouTuber Anthony Garone’s first full-length album in nearly 20 years: OK, But Why? Fans of adventurous yet accessible (and deeply progressive) music will understand. According to the press materials accompanying this dense and aggressive but still melodic sonic assault, the album “pulls together [Garone’s] best work from nearly two decades of writing, recording and obsessing over arrangements that are equal parts song and puzzle. While much of the music existed publicly in earlier forms, this release is the cleaned-up, finished version.” And, indeed, it flows beautifully. It's as if each of the 14 tracks here (even the three with vocals) were conceived, written and recorded with the sole purpose of creating OK, But Why? That said, this album -- angular and complex -- is not necessarily for the faint of heart (or ear). And that’s, well, OK.
