Aurora Clara: Seven Hills

Aurora Clara is one of the most compelling bands to emerge in recent years, and Seven Hills is another strong entry in the band’s catalog. The band’s gift for locking into a groove and letting it unfold is fully intact, and the acoustic touches that defined “Dreams� continue to add contrast and dynamic lift throughout the record.

The title track is a standout, opening with a mellow, bluesleaning vibe before gradually building into a fullon rocker. Midway through, the song kicks into high gear as guitar and flute trade blows, with the Hammond organ sliding in for perfectly timed solo moments. It feels tailormade for the stage. The raunchy guitar tone provides a gritty foil to the flute’s clarity, a tension that becomes one of the album’s defining colors.

“Day Five� keeps that loose, exploratory feel but balances it with tight unison lines and just enough structure to hold the jam together. The electric piano shines throughout, whether adding warmth in the background or stepping forward for a solo. The band dives into their bluesy side in spots, but none more than “Blues for L.C.�, I’m sure they had a blast with all the solo tradeoffs, a fun jamming listen. “Wise Raven� highlights their unrestrained nature, and sounds like will blow the roof off in a live setting.

The album closes with “No Return�, a short acoustic piece that gradually gathers momentum as additional instruments enter. Even in its brevity, it hints at the improvisational potential the band could stretch out onstage.
