Atlas, Dennis: Principle

Keyboardist and vocalist Dennis Atlas-now part of Toto’s 2024 touring lineup-returns with his latest solo effort, Principle. The guest list is undeniably impressive: Marco Minnemann, Bumblefoot, and Toto bandmate Steve Lukather all make appearances. Unfortunately, their presence ends up being the most compelling thing about the album.

After a brief instrumental intro, the first single “Violent Power” bursts in with a riff-heavy, hyper-polished sheen and some flashy keyboard soloing. “Scare Me” follows the same formula, though Lukather’s guitar break injects a welcome spark. Bumblefoot tears through “Games,” but the song itself leans so hard into bombast that the virtuosity feels more like decoration than direction.

By the time “Instincts” arrives, the pattern is clear: overblown vocals, and a glossy production style that pushes the album into keyboard-driven hair metal territory. “Relative Fiction” doubles down with 80sera synth patches and sound effects that feel more nostalgic than intentional. Atlas’ vocals begin to wear thin, and the songwriting never quite delivers.

In the end, not even the stellar cast of musicians can elevate Principle beyond its flaws. The playing is never the issue-everyone involved is world-class-but the album is too polished, too stiff, and too overproduced, with a layer of cheese that becomes impossible to ignore. It’s a showcase of talent in search of stronger songs.
