Parliament-Funkadelic guitarist and Rock-n-Roll Hall of Famer Michael Hampton is releasing a series of three albums, and Into the Public Domain is the first in that series. Hampton came to prominence replacing Eddie Hazel in P-Funk making his debut with the band on 1975’s Let’s Take it to the Stage. Hampton shows that his guitar skills are still intact over the course of this mini-album's 22 minutes. “Fight or Flight” is a rocking opener and Hampton is quickly off to the races jamming over the top of pumping bassline. You’ll hear acoustic guitar peak out which adds a nice texture underneath the ripping guitar. A great groove runs through “Canyon Jam” but unfortunately it’s a short 1:33 in length, I’d have loved to hear Hampton and his band continue jamming over the top. The title track brings on the funk, I’m finding my love for horns continues to grow, and Hampton’s dirty tone is perfect here. “Technicolor Home” has a country feel, so you get a good amount of variation from track to track.
The album left me wanting more, a few of the tracks don’t have enough time to get going before they are over. Into the Public Domain is a really fun listen for guitar lovers, it sounds like they went into the studio and started laying down a grooves for Hampton to throw his tasty guitar licks over. I am looking forward to the next two in the series.
