SHOB: Tintamarre

As soon as I heard the opening strains of “Alain Prost” I knew I would love this band. Get prepared for a funk fest when you dive into “Tintamarre”. Every instrument stands out and has its place in the mix, from the amazing Hammond Organ of Robin Magord to the tasty licks of guitarist Jean Loup Siaut. Drummer Olivier Leani and Bassist SHOB keep things grooving through all nine tracks. The horns prove themselves essential on the title track and “Champagne”, providing the final piece to this puzzle. You get plenty of solo excursions, but this is all about solid songwriting and great grooves. “Fongus” shows a heavier side to their playing which I enjoyed. Things just seem to keep getting better as you make your way through, check out the great bass playing in “Turning Towels” and the funkified “Doomatang” which also has a heavy edge. The guitar brings out a surf tone for “Spooky Machine” and the closer “The Rascal”.

Tintamarre was recorded live in the studio, and as I was listening my first thought was these guys sound like they are just going for it. There are no snoozers, great energy is sustained over the albums 33 minutes. Yes, that is short by today’s standards, but there isn’t a second of fluff here. Not only have I discovered a new band that I totally dig, but I also have the bonus of a back catalog of five additional albums to explore.
