Electric Family, The: Saba

The Electric Family is an unusual beast. Formed by Tom Redecker in the ‘90s, the German psychedelic band craft strange but truly wonderful music. I have reviewed three of their albums thus far and was pretty excited to dig into their 2023 release titled Saba. The album features no less than thirteen players all adding to the band’s eclectic mix of psychedelic, space, folk, and progressive rock. Trippy sounds envelope the soundscape in the album opening “Sticker Che” further exploring folky acoustic guitar sprinkled with Eastern accents, lush Mellotron strings and a wonderful guitar solo from Jochen Schoberth. This leads directly into the wonderful weirdness of “Gull Sweat” where synths and guitar create a captivating sound with psychedelic textures and spacey Kraut vibes. The punk inspired rocker “Reptile” is really cool and I dig the lead vocals of Harry Payuta. Sitar, guitar and organ further entangle creating a psychedelic feast for the ears. “Mr. Megalomaniac” is a wild ride where off kilter drum work collide with frenzied instrumentation creating a total freakout. The underlying ‘60s-like serial detective music is utterly weird but it completely works. Another winner is the chaotic strangeness of “Alan The Arab” where stabbing guitar riffs, bizarre vocals and tribal drumming come together to make some intriguing avant prog.

I love how the band incorporates so many different sounds and styles leaving you wondering how it all works but it just does. There is no doubt this band follows their own collective muse taking their music outside the proverbial box, creating something uniquely their own. Job well done!

A Sireena Records’ release.
