Ignescent: Eternal
Ignescent arrive with Eternal, a record that firmly establishes their place in the modern hard rock/metal landscape, but also one that highlights both the strengths and limitations of that positioning.
Comparisons to Evanescence feel somewhat surface-level, mostly rooted in the female-fronted aspect. In reality, Ignescent lean toward a more contemporary, polished & less distinctive sound, perhaps, but more aligned with today’s accessible, radio-friendly metal. There’s also a stronger parallel to bands like Flyleaf or Skillet, especially in the way melody and message are intertwined.
Musically, the band shows flashes of something heavier and more technical than expected. The guitars hit with purpose, the rhythm section keeps things tight, and there are moments where the band hints at a more aggressive identity. But make no mistake because this is metal that is heavily infused with pop sensibilities, built around hooks, structure, and accessibility rather than experimentation.
Tracks like “Joker” and “Fearless” do a solid job setting the tone early on, balancing energy with melody, while “Light Up The Night” leans more openly into the band’s faith-driven core, a beautiful ballad, a moment that feels like an emotional centerpiece.
However, it’s also at this point where the album begins to lose some of its grip. The second half shifts more decisively into a pop-driven and overtly Christian direction, and while that will certainly resonate with a specific audience, it also makes the material feel more predictable and, at times, too safe. The edge that was hinted at earlier gives way to a more conventional approach, and the songs start blending into each other.
That said, the closing track “Eternal” manages to pull things back into focus, delivering one of the more memorable moments on the record and ending the album on a stronger note.
At the center of it all is Jennifer Benson, whose vocal performance is easily the album’s biggest strength. She brings both power and emotion, carrying the material with confidence and showing clear potential for something even greater down the line.
In the end, Eternal is a well-produced and emotionally sincere album that plays to its strengths but rarely steps outside its comfort zone. There’s talent here, but also a sense that Ignescent are still searching for the version of themselves that will truly set them apart.
For now, it’s a solid step forward, even if it doesn’t quite leave a lasting mark. I’ll definitely be keeping the name on my radar… perhaps hoping for a future turn away from the more predictable paths this record occasionally embraces… cheers!
