Lovano, Joe: Paramount Quartet (feat. Julian Lage, Asante Santi Debriano & Will Calhoun)

Lovano is a Grammy award winning multi-instrumentalist best known as a tenor saxophonist, and on his newest release he has surrounded himself with excellent guests. The album features five original Lovano tunes, and covers of Wayne Shorter (“Lady Day�) and Charlie Haden (“First Song�). The music is loose, open, and atmospheric, when you hear musicians refer to leaving space, well, that’s exactly what I am hearing. Guitarist extraordinaire Julian Lage kicks off the moody “First Song�, something you’d imagine hearing as the bar prepares to close at 4am. Somber tones emanate from both Lovano and Lage on the opener. “Amsterdam� kicks the music into higher gear, with bassist Asante Santi Debriano stepping out to solo, and the band locks in and grooves well with each other. Lage sounds great ripping through “Fanfare for Unity�, his playing stands out and Lovano throws a little extra gas on the fire. I plan to check out more from Julian Lage, he really shines.

The upbeat tracks are more to my liking, and the live feel throughout the album is exactly how this music should be heard. The Lovano/Lage combination works incredibly well, they play off each other nicely. After listening, it made me want to hit my local jazz club, grab a bourbon, and enjoy an evening of live music.
