Kerrigan: Wayfarer

German heavy metal act Kerrigan have recently released their latest album Wayfarer, via High Roller Records.

There is something a little different about this band. No doubt these guys fall into the New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal bucket; however, they have a relatively unique sound within this niche genre.

I’m conscious that I’m regularly stating that the albums I am reviewing are particularly consistent, and here I am yet again noting that it’s hard to pick out clear standout tracks or weak points. Almost all of the songs on this album have a bit of a classic ‘wasted years’ sort of vibe"the tracks are typically constructed around a prominent lead guitar motif or melodic riff, a strong chord progression and memorable vocal melodies. Speaking of the vocals, whilst they are high-pitched, they aren’t delivered with excessive power or force. There is an understated vibe to the vocals, which provides the band with quite a unique sound. I actually really enjoy the melodic approach and lack of over-the-top aggression, as it makes this a relatively easy listening sort of release. Perhaps this comment extends to the production generally, along with the drum arrangements. Who knew easy listening melodic power metal was a thing?!

I’m always happy to receive new albums from High Roller Records, and this is another great listen. "Torchbearer", "Asylum", "Blood and Steel" and "Red Light Tower" are my favourite tracks from what is a very good album, well worth checking out if NWoTHM is your thing.
