Meyer, Björn: Convergence

I recently received three albums to review from the legendary jazz label ECM. I have picked this one to write about first because I know of Björn Meyer from his work with the interesting instrumental folk trio Bazar Blå. Convergence is his second solo album, a follow up to 2017’s Provenance.

This album is just Meyer and his electric bass. That may sound dull, and I expect that for many it might be. I would call the album predominantly ambient or minimalist with a few experimental touches. For instance, on "Magnétique", Meyer produces a somewhat metallic sound “thanks to a special construction of magnets, a spring, and some drops of superglue.” John Cage would be proud.

This album, like many on ECM, will have a niche audience. Fortunately, I’m part of that market. If you like, say, Brian Eno’s work from the late 1970s and early 1980s, give Convergence a shot.
