Demo Rumudo: Second Nature

There have been a lot of promising new prog bands coming from Spain, including Ekzilo, Regna, and Vientos Moderados del Este, all on the Astronomy Recording Music label. Add Demo Rumudo to that esteemed list. The band released its first full-length album at the end of 2025, Second Nature, and I’ve been playing it often since.

This instrumental quintet is comprised of �lvaro Fernández on a wide variety of wind instruments, Gabriel Visinel on guitars, �ngel Rodríguez on drums, Andrés Real on fretless and double bass, and Hugo Martsan on keyboards. Over the roughly 40 minutes of the album, the listener is treated to a greater variety of sounds than one could reasonably expect, from free jazz to funk to carnival to baroque to classical. I can’t think of a band to directly compare them to, but King Crimson at their improvisational best, Can when they excluded vocals, and Gryphon come to mind. A slightly different incarnation of the band previously released a three-song EP called Consequencias, with similar stylings.

In addition to the great tunes, Second Nature has a fantastic cover, evocative of the sometimes charmingly chaotic music contained within.
