Ueberschaer: Flow Of Time
This one has taken a while to get to but here it is. The band is Ueberschaer and are based out of Bremen, Germany. It initially started as a one man project led by vocalist Heiko Ueberschaer. He released a couple of EPs a few years back and 2022 saw the release of his debut titled Flow Of Time. This time around there are notable players like keyboardist Adam Holzman (Steven Wilson, Miles Davis, Grover Washington) and bassist Lars Lehmann (UFO, Simon Phillips, Jimmy Keegan, Vinnie Moore, Uli Jon Roth). Here is the entire cast of musicians:
Heiko Ueberschaer (vocals, piano, synths, samples, orchestra, choir arrangement, wind controller)
Adam Holzman (piano, Moog, Hammond organ, Doepfer modular, Fender Rhodes, Mellotron, other synths)
Martin Schnella (acoustic guitar)
Axel Köhnken (electric and acoustic guitar, piano, bass)
Lars Lehmann (bass)
Kristof Hinz (drums and percussion)
Lennart Hinz (Hammond organ, Moog)
Rainald Menges (synthesizer)
The band incorporates a number of different elements and styles including classical, jazz, fusion and blues, all melded seamlessly into their own take on progressive rock. The album begins with the three part suite “Heaven’s Gate”, a sprawling prog rock opus that features Holzman's wonderful synth play, symphonic touches, earworm melodies, addictive choral vocals and a variety of guitar textures from chugging to proggy chord progressions. Ueberschaer has a very unique voice but I urge you to stick with him. His low baritone took some getting used to for me but in the end and after repeated spins his vocals truly offer up another dimension and really do suit these tracks well. Next is “Togetherness” with its gentle keyboard intro, bubbling spacey synths, and deep low end vocals. If you dig a bit of classical, progressive, and space rock, it’s all here. With the balladic “Despair”, Ueberschaer's vocals are perhaps his best on the disc and the music carries a hint a sadness including a nice synth solo. Just a lovely, crafted song - art rock at its finest. One of the most dynamic songs has to be “Crime” where heavy riffs merge with beautiful acoustic guitar, lovely piano, strings, and another emotive vocal performance. The twists and turns merge with the song’s decisive one way flow creating another superb slice of art rock.
Immaculately recorded, the sound is vibrant and deep with all instruments clearly separated giving this music a revealing spatial quality and sounds wonderful on a good stereo or headphones. Really, I cannot recommend this album enough to anyone who digs progressive rock.
A Sireena Records' release.
