A Flying Fish: El Pez Que Voló - ACT II

Our friend Teezûck, who we were introduced to a few years ago in the first act of this psychedelic opera/musical, is back. He’s the son of a bird and a fish who lives under the sea. In the first act, he attempted to leave his nest and fly, but we find out in the second act that this didn’t work out as he had hoped. According to Râhoola, the mastermind behind A Flying Fish, Teezûck falls and plunges “into the darkest and most terrifying cavern of all: the subconscious mind. Reality, fiction, memories, myths and legends intertwine in this dark, acidic mirrored circus where Teezûck will have to learn to meditate and master his psyche.”

Although there are a number of guest vocalists on the album, both male and female, there is very little singing, except on a few of the tracks. Rather, the vocals are largely spoken word, often fanciful and dramatic, and meant to convey the story, which requires the lyrics in the liner notes to fully understand, though the flow of the tracks and the moods they evoke are arguably enough to follow along. As for the music proper, I don’t really know how to explain it. Maybe some early Zappa combined with Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds, the 1975 version of Peter and the Wolf narrated by Viv Stanshall, and the soundtrack to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, although some of the playing on those albums is definitely proggier and more virtuosic.

This is not for everybody to say the least, and some will be turned off right out of the gates. But, like with the first act, I found it entertaining enough and will certainly finish the journey with acts three and four when they appear.
