Vaporeyes: Still
As I continue to explore the Jam Band scene, my latest discovery (courtesy of Ken Golden) is the Syracuse New York-based quartet Vaporeyes. Self-described as Progressive Rock/Psychedelic Jam Band, that description alone means they will get a listen. The opening “Burgerwalker” is a terrific jam filled with spacey electric keys, and as the lead guitar work of Patrick Tierney soars over the top. What a great vibe, plenty of atmosphere without sacrificing balls-out playing, this track rocks. After hearing the opener, all I could think about was making the two-hour trek from my house to see these guys live in Syracuse. The vocals have a laid-back quality and fit the music. “Teeth” blends the more psych/atmospheric sounds with a heavier crunch, providing a needed contrast. The closing epic “Still” is 16+ minutes of jamming that finds a groove and milks it for all it is worth. Bass and drums create a funky foundation as the guitar and keys float over the rhythm section. The intensity slowly builds, but never drastically deviates, yet they manage to make it work. I am sure this is a feature in the live shows, and I would bet my last dollar the band goes for broke.
My biggest criticism is the band needs to take more chances and stretch out a bit. The music gets repetitive, and may not have enough variation for the listener. I’d also like more lead/synth work to compliment and play off the guitar. There is something about Vaporeyes and their sound that connected with me. The keyboard sounds are exactly what I would use, they work perfectly as the foundation of these songs. I plan to check these guys out on YouTube, and who knows, a trip to Syracuse might be in my future.
