Alta Forma: Trajectory
Canadian multi instrumentalist Antoine Fafard has built a solid reputation in the jazz fusion and progressive rock circles, and with Alta Forma he continues to refine a compelling blend of technical virtuosity and song driven progressive rock. Trajectory brings back vocalist and multi instrumentalist JK Harrison and the always exceptional Todd Sucherman, whose rhythmic presence remains one of the defining pillars of this project.
Musically, this record feels like Spock’s Beard meeting The Aristocrats, a melodic progressive rock album rich in rhythmic virtuosity, tasteful fusion nuances, and very pleasant vocals that recall the melodic sensibilities of Moon Letters, Echolyn, and Porcupine Tree. Compared to the trio’s 2022 debut Spatium & Tempus, Trajectory feels less exploratory but equally impressive in terms of musicianship, focusing more on cohesive songwriting while still allowing plenty of room for instrumental flair.
Highlights are plentiful, with the title track “Trajectory”, “Independent Mind”, “I Remember Tomorrow”, “Can’t Escape”, and the album closer “Conspirations” standing out as particularly strong moments, though the entire 45-minute runtime remains consistently engaging. Harrison’s contribution deserves special mention, as his vocal delivery and keyboard and piano work add depth, melody, and emotional resonance throughout the album.
It is a shame that a record of this quality will likely reach only a niche audience, limited to those deeply embedded in the progressive and fusion scenes. Had I been more aware of this release at the time, Trajectory could have easily landed among my top 20 prog related albums of 2025. A really nice surprise and a record that deserves far more attention… cheers!
