Haurun: Wilting Within
Now, here is something a little different. The Oakland band Haurun formed in 2018 and released their debut album titled Wilting Within in 2023. The band has a mellower side to their chosen doom-stoner inclinations making this album difficult to pigeonhole to any one genre. Take a little doom, stoner, shoegaze, and psychedelic, mix it in a blender and you get quite a refined bit of metal. The band incorporate textured guitar riffs and sounds into their own particular brand of doomy metal, led by the ethereal vocals of Lyra Cruz. Overall, this is a dark sounding album with its opaque hues bleeding the colours into a surrounding mist of dark melancholy. That said, this is by no means a depressing album, Cruz’s melodic vocals smoothly taking the music in both soft and heavy directions.
The opening track “Abyss” begins with moody and ethereal sounds, disparate guitar chords, very textured with a hint of psychedelic trippiness. The tones are dark and when the full fledged groove starts its full on psychedelic doom with a good amount of fuzz and distortion. “Lost & Found” begins with slowly picked clean guitar, the tone dripping with somber vibes, before the guitars erupt in a flurry of fuzz and distortion. Absolutely awesome. It’s these soft and heavy transitions that are so dynamic. More psychedelic sounds can be heard in the hypnotic “Tension” with its wall of sound distortion, dreamy lead vocals, and darkly lit grooves. With “Flying Low” you’ll hear a lovely slow burning guitar solo and on the album ending “Soil” the riffs are slow and heavy and the guitar solos take on an edgy psychedelic vibe. Eleven minutes of tasty grooves and excellent guitar work. A fine ending to what is an exhilarating listen. Easily recommended.
A Small Stone Records’ release.
