Poobah: Anthology - Burning In The Rain

I am not sure how I missed this band but Poobah, hailing from Youngstown, Ohio, have been around for over fifty years and released their first album Let Me In in 1972, and have continued to release music through the intervening years.

This brings us to their 2022 release titled Anthology: Burning In The Rain, a career spanning retrospective featuring tracks taken from 1972 to 2021. I have to say this is a fantastic slice of heavy rock and it is interesting to hear how the band have forged their metal path from the early days in the ‘70s to current times. The first track “Burning In The Rain” has huge chunky riffs and that classic chug that Maiden made famous. A little Sabbath with a dash of Purple, minus the organ, left me breathless with its searing guitar and fuzzed out distortion. “C’mon Let It Go” has a slow, burning sound, visceral heavy rock with fiery guitar and excellent lead vocals. “Maximum Pleasure” has riffs rising out of the murky sludge and an almost chaotic ending, the energy this band harnesses is something special. The gritty rock of “My Name Is Mud”, the gentle and near trippy psychedelia of “Try It”, and the pure hard rock of “Jump Thru The Golden Ring”, taken from the Steamroller album (1979) are more excellent tracks. Another favourite is “Mr. Destroyer” going all the way back to their 1972 debut Let Me In and is a fine example of heavy psych with its galloping riffs and a guitar solo that oozes blue hazed bars and burning fretboards.

I am so glad to have discovered this great band and cannot wait to dig in a little deeper. For those unfamiliar with the band, Burning In The Rain would be a wise purchase. Highly recommended!

A Ripple Music release.
