Here’s a rifftastic ripper from Germany’s Wolfskull -- a band that manages to worship thick and doomy guitars, epic hooks and fist-pumping melodies. The 10 gloriously heavy songs on Midnite Masters burst forth from the speakers to remind us that rock most certainly is not dead.
Nicknames seem de rigueur for this band, with Pete 9 on vocals, Feratu on guitars and keys, Drop D. on bass and Styx on drums; only guitarist Mike Nero seems to go with a full name. Regardless, Pete 9’s deep voice and Feratu’s and Nero’s riffs propel this record from the start, as the title track boldly proclaims Wolkfskull’s musical mission. “Destyna” slows the pace but not the intensity, “Jaguarette” could draw favorable comparisons to Volbeat and the short instrumental “Call of the Wayward Ones” invokes a militaristic tone. Traces of wickedness pop up throughout, both lyrically and musically, yet Midnite Masters seldom wavers -- making this a refreshing spin from beginning to end.
