Garcia, Vincen: Vivace

It’s not often you hear the bass guitar out front as the lead instrument, but Garcia makes this work with his dazzling skill and songs. Garcia is a force of nature; his music is funky and soulful, featuring incredible horn arrangements that accentuate the basslines that drive the music. There’s a bass solo track, “Keep Calm,� that features a more reserved side of Garcia’s playing; it offers a breather in the otherwise action-packed disc. The unison guitar/bass riff in Todo Bien is so cool. “Jet Lag� opens with my favorite horn parts on the album, and adds in the fiery bass playing and quick guitar flourishes for the finishing touch. Although the bass is right out front, it all gels; these songs are catchy without sacrificing any complexity.

Jaw-dropping musicianship and energy, combined with good songwriting, make this a can’t-miss. “Punk Funk� is a smoking workout for all involved, monster bass playing, horn stabs, and the drums keep everything in line. The guitar is quite prominent here, this is how you close an album, full speed ahead!
