Lardat, Tom: Revenir au rêve
To quote Jerry Garcia, the Grateful Dead’s music was like licorice: “Not everybody likes licorice, but the people who like licorice really like licorice.” Well, I really like what Tom Lardat is serving up on this EP, though I know I might be in the minority among SoT listeners regarding the release.
It’s a four-song piano movement available on streaming services only. The title of the EP translates roughly as “To return to the dream” and each of the movements has the same name, just different numbers: “Dans le miroir,” or “In the mirror.” In the promotional materials, Lardat states that he is a fan of Dream Theater, Adagio, and Symphony X, and these influences are occasionally evident. But most of all, you can hear a highly skilled musician playing complex arrangements.
I checked out his YouTube channel to see some of his other work. Included are keyboard solos from Dream Theater’s “Finally Free” and “Take the Time,” among other tunes. Give this young Swiss musician a chance. I’d be surprised if we don’t hear more from him in the future.
