Bipolaroids, The: Originals

The Bipolaroids is another side project involving members of Third Of Never along with multi-instrumentalist John Guy Barwick. The music was recorded at Lil Vegas Studio LaGrange, North Carolina and focuses on the musician’s skills as improvisers. The album is titled Originals and playing on the album are:

John Guy Barwick (guitar, bass, keyboards)
Jon Dawson (drums, bass, guitar, keyboards)
Jode Haskins (bass)
Brandon Ruth (drums)

With Originals these four musicians show their innate chemistry, with the ability to be completely in sync with one another, almost knowing where the other will go before the path has been laid. It is a very impressive display of creative musicianship beginning with “Ecstasiae” where the groove settles in with fantastic guitar work and organ embellishments. The guitar is crisp and clean, the soundscapes invoking ‘70s era Pink Floyd. The band’s inclination towards psychedelia can be heard on “Leaning In” where the groove has an hypnotic effect and the drumming is front and center. The trippy “Orion Flees Scorpius (part 1)” features spacey effects and is more experimental than the previous tracks. The guitar work flows like a dream in the slightly psychedelic “Asynchronicity” and in the appropriately titled “The Latin Panther” the percussion and smoky guitar work have a certain Latin flair.

Originals showcases Barwick and his bandmates ability to create music outside of conventional norms while still retaining a listenability that not all musicians possess. A well-earned four stars!
