Begelman, Dan: Something Glass
Something Glass is the first solo album from multi-instrumentalist Dan Begelman. Tasty guitar licks weave throughout the album's ten tracks. Begelman is a riff master; his songs are full of memorable guitar melodies along with a solid foundation of cool riffs. The melody to the opening “Wind In Your Hair” is one that stays with me, a tune I can hum on a second’s notice, and those harmony guitar leads add the right touch. “Japanese Maple (Kira’s Tree) is a beautiful acoustic piece with Hackett-like e-bow guitar swells to add flavor. I love the riff in “Trigger Happy”, a hard-hitting tune that will have your head bopping’. “Tunnel Vision” is the most progressive track, I love the changes and the piano and organ add so much flavor to the music. Great feel and tone throughout, and his best performance might be on the slow blues of “Broken Rings”. A few different flavors find their way into “Tsunami”, and more cool riffs and keyboards keep it fresh.
As good a player as Begelman is, after repeated listens what stands out is the songwriting. The lead work is tasty, but it’s the riffs and tunes that catch my ear. Begelman also has three albums with his band Project 7 that I plan to check out.
