Carrion Vael: Slay Utterly

Carrion Vael is a 5-piece modern death metal band from Richmond, Indiana. Slay Utterly is their 3rd album in a recent run of full-length releases by Unique Leader Records.

Carrion Vael plays a heavy brand of melodic death metal with a distinctly modern approach-think along the lines of bands like The Black Dhalia Murder, Cattle Decapitation, and to a lesser extent, more technical acts like Archspire.

The band has a relatively distinctive style with hyper-fast drumming and melodic riffing. The vocal approach is guttural yet varied. I reviewed their 2022 release Abhorrent Obsessions for SoT, and looking back, there is a relatively similar critique to be given this time around too. Over the course of the release, we’ve got a relatively ‘one-paced’ or one-dimensional album. If you love track 1, you’ll love the whole album.

For me, this is a solid release from a band with clear talent. Whilst it’s not exactly the sort of death metal I typically reach for, I do respect it for what it is, and imagine that Carrion Vael are a force to be reckoned with in the live setting. Their tunes seem tailor-made for causing chaos in the pit!
