Ines: Hunting the Fox

Originally released in 1994, Hunting The Fox stands as one of the cornerstones of German neo-progressive rock from the mid-90s. Ines operated firmly within the melodic and atmospheric tradition of the genre, drawing clear inspiration from bands like Marillion and IQ, yet presenting it with a distinctly European sensitivity and a strong focus on mood rather than instrumental excess.

At over an hour in length, Hunting The Fox is undeniably a demanding listen, but one that rewards patience. The album flows more like a continuous narrative than a collection of standalone songs, relying on recurring melodic ideas, layered keyboards, and expressive guitar lines to keep the listener engaged. “In the Dark of Night” and “Mother Moon” are definitely highlights, showcasing the band’s ability to balance emotional weight with refined arrangements. “Water”, “Earth, Sun and Moon”, and “Meet Me on the Mountain” are kind of introspective, while the title track “Hunting The Fox” closes the record on a contemplative and melodic note.

Vocals are delivered with restraint and clarity, serving the songs rather than dominating them, while the instrumental performances emphasize texture and atmosphere over technical fireworks. This is not an album built on immediacy, but on immersion.

Hunting The Fox may feel long by modern standards, but it remains a strong and representative document of the German neo-prog movement of the era, especially for listeners who appreciate melodic storytelling and slow-burn compositions… cheers!
