Schulze, Klaus: Timewind

German electronic music pioneer Klaus Schulze needs no introduction. The former Tangerine Dream/Ash Ra Temple member began his solo career in 1972 with his debut titled Irrlicht. In 1975 came Timewind, now considered a classic in the electronic genre. The original release consisted of two tracks but with a running time of close to fifty-nine minutes there is no shortage of music to explore. In 2016 MIG Music came out with a 2 CD edition, the bonus disc consisting of three tracks and an additional fifty-six minutes of music. So, let us dig in.

Timewind has to be considered a classic in electronic music and is one of Schulze’s best known albums. The disc opens with the near thirty-one minute “Bayreuth Return”, a sequencer driven track with layers of synths that will take you on a celestial journey to another realm. The music is just so otherworldly, the wind effects, the blips and bleeps, the pulsating sequencers, it is all superbly cool. The second track “Wahnfried 1883” is no less cosmic. Although featuring less sequencers the music is still incredibly hypnotic and trance inducing. Schulze has that slow burn down to a science.

The bonus disc contains three tracks, of which the first two " “Echoes of Time” and “Solar Wind” are live variations of “Bayreuth Return”. Unlike some bonus additions, these fit in nicely with the original tracks. The last track “Windy Times” was recorded in 2000 and as Klaus points out in the liner notes, you can hear the differences in sound as technology has skyrocketed since the ‘70s and ‘80s. The repeating sequencers are more robust, the sound perhaps crisper and with greater definition. Overall a nice addition to the original recording.

I should also mention the original artwork by Urs Amman is outstanding, the cover painting meshing perfectly with the cosmic theme.

Timewind is a classic. Enough said.
