Rainbows Are Free: Heavy Petal Music
Here is a powerful live document from the heavy psychedelic rock band Rainbows Are Free titled Heavy Petal Music. The band hail from Norman, Oklahoma and released a debut EP in 2008 and followed that up with a full length in 2010. Here is the band’s full length discography:
Believers In Medicine (2010)
Waves head Of The Ocean (2014)
Head Pains (2019)
Heavy Petal Music(2023)
Silver And Gold (2025)
In the band are:
Brandon Kistler (vocals)
Richie Tarver (guitars)
Bobby Onspaugh (guitars)
Chad Hogue (bass)
Jason Smith (drums)
The band is led by Kistler’s unique vocals. His voice is just so versatile, one moment clean and emotive, the next angry and extreme, and everything in between. The dual guitar riffs from Tarver and Onspaugh are a huge plus, giving these songs plenty of drive and texture creating different moods in the process, from psychedelic to heavy stoner rock and metal.
The discordant riffs beginning the album opening “Come” create an ominous feel that continues throughout as the mesmerizing riffs and fantastic vocals from Kistler take the song’s relentless heaviness in subtle psychedelic and doomy directions. A discordant guitar intro begins the psychedelic influenced heavy rock of “Electricity On Wax” as the lead vocalists shrieks his way right out of the ‘60s. On the hazy, psychedelic infused “Like A River”, Kistler pulls out his best Jim Morrison, a demented poet seeking your attention as the drone-like riffs will have you mesmerized. The tempos shift and slide in the psychedelic/space driven “Shapeshifter” and in the album ending “Crystal Ball” the band are at their creative best, twisting and turning through fuzzed out riffs and nuanced psychedelics.
Heavy Petal Music is just an excellent heavy rock album steeped in psychedelia and stoner rock vibes. I cannot wait to hear more from this band.
A Ripple Music release.
