Duskwood: The Last Voyage
Hailing from Somerset, UK, Duskwood have been around for a number of years and released their debut album titled Desert Queen in 2016 followed by The Last Voyage in 2023. The band also has a few EPs to their credit and on this review we will explore The Last Voyage, their most recent studio album.
This is my first experience hearing the band and The Last Voyage is an outstanding foray into desert and stoner rock/metal realms. The music drives with intensity, the riffs often forming walls of distortion and fuzz, the vocals powerful, and the melodies always close at hand as there are some great choruses throughout the disc’s eight tracks. The band expertly weave atmospheric elements into the heaviness " it all makes for a riveting and compelling listen.
An opening salvo of trippy synths begins “Vagrant” before venturing into a distorted wall of fuzz and strong lead vocals. The guitar's scorching riffs lay down a huge amount of fuzz until a well-defined riff breaks through the noise. It’s these bursts of creativity that make this such a fun listen. On “Gammon Lord” the crisp drums and percussion and disparate guitar give this one a cleaner sound before the massive fuzzed out riffs create a deafening and raging aural assault. The aggressive riffs and vocals demonstrate the band’s tight musicianship while on “Blackhand” the band’s penchant for atmospheric psychedelics marries well with the heavy distortion. The rhythmic heavy “Skyriders” has a ripping tempo with calmer moments scattered throughout before the band wrap it up with the nine minute epic “Legacy”, showcasing the band’s muscular riffs and vocals with a more nuanced approach.
Duskwood have made a huge statement with The Last Voyage and one can only hope there will be many more to come from this excellent band. Highly recommended!
