Alwanzatar: Engsyre
Alwanzatar is a solo project of Krizla (Kristoffer Momrak), a member of progressive-folk outfit Tusmørke. The Norwegian musician has a number of albums under the Alwanzatar umbrella, the latest being his 2024 release titled Engsyre. I have reviewed a couple of previous releases: Fangarmer Gjennom (2018) and Den Glemte Dalen (2021). Engsyre is Krizla’s sixth album and it is a fine listen, especially for those into techno, prog, and experimental electronic music. Throw in a little Krautrock and Middle Eastern elements and you have a pretty intriguing album.
Synthesizers and flute are the instruments of choice and on the album opening “Høymole” sequencers and syncopated percussion bring in a cosmic vibe, the trippy synths easily drawing my attention with their percolating sheen and space driven electronic effects. The Middle Eastern flute and synthesized accents add to the exotic flavour. A burst of noise begins “Tårnhode Med Skyer” where bubbling synths and ethereal flute take us into another cosmic void. The flute adds more Eastern touches amidst the synth laden trippiness. “Fjerdingby Filterbattle” begins with weird effects and voice samples before shimmering synthesized rhythms take hold and sinuous flute work weaves amongst the synth inflected moodscape. Krizla is an expert at creating otherworldly soundscapes, transporting the listener into these weird and wonderful worlds.
Anyone who appreciates electronic music, like Tangerine Dream or Jean-Michel Jarre, dominated by synthesizers (including Mellotron) would be wise to give Engsyre your undivided attention. Recommended.
An Apollon Records’ release.
