Waterworks Junction: Time Will Tell

Mike Ian is a multi-instrumentalist/songwriter who was previously unknown to me before receiving his latest project titled Waterworks Junction and the album Time Will Tell. The core of the group features Ian and longtime music partner Matt Janda along with vocalist Gab Howarth. Guest musicians also contributed but there are no credits available.

The albums’ theme explores the life of a woman, from birth to old age, as she experiences The Great Depression, WWII, and the succeeding decades, including the tumultuous ‘70s. The title track begins the disc with a folky/Americana vibe, very upbeat and catchy with good musicianship and excellent female vocals. Next is the bluegrass inspired “Something About You�, an infectious piece with catchy acoustic rhythms, lush vocals, and pretty piano rounding out the Americana-tinged soundscape. A little country twang can be heard on the catchy “River Of Hope� and on the jaunty “West Texas Plains� the old school country sounds and nice guitar work will easily stick in your ears if given half the chance.

While this is not music I typically listen to it is all very well done with exceptional melodies, melodic vocals, and excellent musicianship. Mike’s production, mixing, and recording is also very professional and is something he should be proud of.

While far from the progressive rock that passes through my listening desk, I can certainly see myself digging into this from time to time. A job well done.
