Slug Comparison: A Battle to the End Fought on the Edge of a Knife
What a title! It’s clever, but I’m not sure that Doug Harrison, the man behind Slug Comparison, did himself any favors by choosing it. I can’t see it rolling off people’s tongues easily.
On to the music. The promotional material says that the album should be for fans of Mother Mother, The Killers, Rush, and Porcupine Tree. I haven’t heard of Mother Mother, though I see that they are based in British Columbia, like Harrison, and I have only passing familiarity with The Killers. But Rush and Porcupine Tree, yes, they’re definitely up my alley. The album is enjoyable overall, but there is little that is traditionally “progressive” about it. Rather, I would characterize it as being closer to grunge or alt rock.
Harrison plays guitar and bass, and provides all the vocals, while Flavio Cirillo does the drumming. Both are more than competent musicians and Harrison is a good lyricist in an angsty sort of way. The album is catchy in many spots, though I don’t think it will fit the tastes of most SoT readers. But if you’re feeling nostalgic and want to go back to 1993, this will do the job. It appears that Slug Comparison has two previous releases and this one had enough good tunes that I might check them out.
