Final Gravity: Stormchaser

When I noticed that there was a cover of “Entre Nous” on this album, I thought it was a pretty good bet that the Los Angeles-based band Final Gravity had been influenced by Rush, of course. But then I put the CD in and the first track could have come off Counterparts, with the singer Melissa Jane Dichiera sounding uncannily like Geddy Lee at points, and the band chugging along with heaviness and virtuosity.

For the rest of the tracks, minus “Entre Nous,” where Dichiera again resembles Geddy, she sounds like a cross between Pat Benatar, Kim Gordon, and PJ Harvey. Joining her are John Chominsky on drums, Michael Clark on guitars and keyboards, and Charles Mumford on bass. It appears that this is their fourth release. The first, self-titled from 2009, was with a male vocalist. Then came an EP the following year, and Surviving Humanity from early 2021.

At just more than 30 minutes, Stormchaser is roughly EP length also. I would have liked more, but this is solid heavy rock with plenty of progressive flourishes. Final Gravity is a band to watch, and I hope they get a proper label deal. They deserve it. I’m giving this 3.5 stars. With a few more tunes of equal quality, it would have earned four.
