Direwolf: Gods Can Die
Independent Canadian metal Band Direwolf have recently released their debut album Gods Can Die (Nov 7, 2025).
This album isn’t re-inventing the wheel, but fans of bands like Machine Head and Trivium will find plenty to like on here. The 8 tracks are riff-based, melodic metal tunes that feature a raspy style melodic vocal that carries melody and aggression in equal measures.
The guitar riffing is the standout feature of this release to my ears. Every track seems to have one or two guitar riffs that just ‘scratch the itch’. A few of the members of Direwolf also play in Canadian rock band The Motorleague, and that makes sense to me. It’s clear that whilst we’re talking about an independent debut release, this isn’t a naive release from a songwriting or playing perspective. Allowing myself to be critical, the production does have a slightly DIY aesthetic to my ears.
Gods Can Die is an enjoyable modern melodic metal album. I hate to repeat myself but stylistically there is a lot of similarities between this band and bands like Machine Head and Trivium, so they are an obvious set of bands to refer to for recommendation. If you’re into these bands, don’t hesitate to check out this release.
