Spherical Agenda: Spherical Agenda

It’s easy to fall back on old favorites, but something is energizing about discovering new bands. Spherical Agenda is a fusion quartet from Cincinnati Ohio, citing influences the likes of Tony Williams Lifetime, Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Return to Forever. As a fusion fan, reading that in their bio means I must check them out. As I reach track 3, “Father Frank�, the interplay between guitarist Brandon Coleman and keyboardist Ben Tweedt is infectious, catchy songs and stinging solos. The rhythm section of Matt Wiles (Bass) and Devon Leigh (Drums) really grooves, giving the music drive and energy. The experimental “Sector 8� misses the mark to my ears, it’s the first bump in the road, more about noise and sounds than composition. “Turbulent Juice� rights the ship, my favorite track featuring smoking guitar leads, more of this please.

Five tracks in, and I am digging the album. Unfortunately, the back half of the album shifts to cruise control instead of stepping on the gas. “Crystalline� kills the momentum achieved from the previous track, a bit too smooth, and the closer “Sprinkles� limps to the finish line. Each musician contributes a stellar performance, but the track fails to deliver that knockout punch, and the almost nine-minute length is overkill. Overall, excellent musicianship and good tunes, but the album needs more firepower to stand out.
