In the summer of 2024, Alkaloid played several genre-defying performances at the Bachfestival in the Netherlands at Bibelot / Dordrecht and Paard van Troje / The Hague. Bach Out of Bounds captures these performances for prosperity.

The live album consists of Alkaloid (Morean, Hannes Grossmann, Linus Klausenitzer, Justin Hombach) joined by guest Max Blok (Guitars) and an ensemble of vocalists, accordion and strings.

The track list is a mix of re-imagined Bach compositions (prepared for the Bach Festival), some fan favourites and some new songs; “Beneath the Sea�, “Cthulhu� and lead single “Haunter of the Void�. You can see why this has been given a physical release - the new songs and Bach Interpretations cannot be found anywhere else, and are sure to be sought out by die hard fans.

It doesn’t need to be said, but the musicianship is very strong. Quite amazing to consider this was all pulled off live. The scope of the work is very impressive too, clearly pushing boundaries between Classical music, prog and extreme metal, and taking full advantage of the accompaniment of the ensemble.

All in all I find this to be an enjoyable release. I grew up in a household where classical music was regularly played, and I have a soft spot for Bach. The collection of new and old tracks is great too. My only knock on this is that the layered vocals can become a bit much over the course of the release, and that from a listening longevity perspective, this isn’t the sort of album I would feel compelled to listen to regularly �" but that’s a statement I make regularly about live albums, and especially those that capture ‘events’.
