Hailing from Nashville Tn, Mr. Mayo formed after the musicians met through the local jam scene. A mutual love for fusion and discovered musical chemistry between them led to the formation of the band. A quartet featuring ripping guitar and keyboard solos, but one of the first things that caught my ear was the bass playing of Leland Nelson. Check out “Deep Fried Ketchup” for stellar lead bass work, but his stamp is all over the album. This track also gives each member a chance to step in the spotlight, and they know how to turn up the heat. Guitarist Kent Crawley shows off a Holdsworth influence on the rocking “Ponder”. The closer “Chimkin Grease” is a smorgasbord of flavors taking the listener back and forth between a simmering groove to the full-on assault of these guys cranking everything up to ten. The organ gives me a gospel feel, great electric keys and synth tones, and the soloing has raw energy. the band explodes around the 1:15 mark, this is a perfect example of how important dynamics are to music.
The band obviously values humor/sarcasm with a name like Mr. Mayo and song titles such as "Cheeto Fingers". Clocking in at just 37 minutes, this offers an opportunity to give this a full listen and get a feel for what these guys are about.
Standout Tracks: "Ponder", and "Chimkin’ Grease".
