Morass Of Molasses: End All We Know
Now we head to Reading, UK to take a closer look at the heavy stoner rock band Morass Of Molasses. In case you were wondering, the band’s name comes from the 1919 molasses tank rupture in Boston where twenty-one people lost their lives in one of the most bizarre accidents you will ever read about.
The band is:
Bones Huse (lead vocals)
Phil Williams (lead guitar)
Raj Puni (drums and percussion)
Sian Greenaway (guest vocals)
Matt Ainsworth (flute and synth)
End All We Know (2023) is the band's latest where you will hear heavy stoner rock but with elements of progressive, metal, and even heavy blues. This multi genre approach ensures the music never gets boring and add to that excellent musicianship " suffice to say we have a real winner on our hands. The first three tracks: “The Origin Of North”, Hellfayre”, and “Sinkhole” feature a mix of clean and guttural vocals, massive guitar riffs, cool progressions, and fiery guitar solos. Sometimes the vocals are buried underneath the heavily distorted guitars, other times are out front showcasing considerable power. Even though this is pretty heavy stuff, the melodies are always close at hand ensuring a certain amount of staying power. A beginning moody guitarscape and a propulsive rhythmic groove highlights the heavy and rocking “Naysayer” with its psych-infused guitar solo and on “Slingshot Around The Sun” the band’s bluesy hard rock and progressive roots are infused with one of the catchiest guitar progressions on the disc. With “Terra Nova” the band mix heavy stoner with Jethro Tull-like progressive rock and in “Prima Materia” the heavy yet catchy guitar riffs are offset with melodic clean vocals. The disc ends with “Wings Of Reverie” and its calming guitar intro and stabbing leads, a truly progressive jam intermixed with heavy and soft moments and rich song dynamics.
End All We Know is indeed an excellent work, filled with excellent melodies and musicianship, the band’s superb craftmanship can be heard throughout. Highly recommended!
A Ripple Music release.
