Ekzilo: Quantum Phase Transition
This an outstanding album, one that will surely make my best of 2025 list. Ekzilo are a Spanish quartet comprised of Jose Ruiz on electric and flamenco guitars, Abelix Tudela on drums, Paula RodrÃguez on keyboards and vocals, and Angel Veas on bass.
Quantum Phase Transition, their second effort, starts out with vocals reminiscent of Steven Wilson and then breaks into death metal growls that alternate with clean vocals throughout the song. It is propelled by an almost hypnotic bass line, paired with some nice very key work, often understated but always present guitars, and drums that swing. The rest of the tracks are essentially instrumental and can certainly be described as prog, but classifying them further is hard. There are heavy, spacey, and pastoral moments, often found within the same tune, three of which are roughly nine minutes as well as a full-scale epic of nearly nineteen minutes.
After hearing Quantum Phase Transition, I went back to Ekzilo’s 2020 self-titled debut. It’s good, but this is a big advance. I hope we don’t have to wait another five years for their third album.
