Tibbetts, Steve: Close
Moody, atmospheric, and droning come to mind when listening to Close. Tibbetts' acoustic guitar creates the foundation for these pieces, with added percussion and often electric guitar to add swells or a droning presence over the acoustic foundation. Many tracks are extremely short, flowing from one idea to the next. The tracks run from 45 seconds to one that is close to 10 minutes. Listening on a quiet Sunday morning, the music is of a meditative quality, whether you sit back and close your eyes or just have it playing in the background. I felt as if I was listening to one long piece of music rather than various tracks.
The closest in my listening experience would be Michael Hedges’ work, but this has a darker quality. At the very least, it creates a unique listening experience, acoustic guitar soundscapes with added instrumentation. For lack of a better classification, the music has a haunting quality, and it’s all about creating a mood.
