I love it when artists come together to create music outside of their bands or solo careers. Memories of Home unites two Jazz giants, John Scofield (guitar) and Dave Holland (bass) who have worked with such great artists as Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock; just in case you are not familiar with either musician. The duo toured together in 2021 and 2024, so, it seems like a logical next step to collaborate on an album. In addition, the writing is split with Scofield penning five songs to Holland’s four. With just the two of them playing, you hear every note with full clarity, its minimalist approach is a refreshing shift from my usual listening. This is exactly what is meant when they say let the music “breathe”. Scofield’s slinky guitar lines and chording paired with Hollands thumping bass make it feel like they are playing right in front of you. One of my favorites here is “Not for Nothin’”, Scofield dives in with Bluesy bends, Jazzy chording, and slick runs while Holland walks that bass line underneath. Holland has a great bass line in “You I Love” while Scofield comps over the top.
Memories of Home is an intriguing listen, and it’s a joy hearing these two musicians playing with and off each other. Every nuance is captured, making you appreciate all the subtlety and dynamics that went into this recording.
