First off: Very cool band name. Next: Equally compelling album title.
Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s talk about the music. Whispers of Granite is a two-person collaboration between Norwegian vocalist and vocal composer Trude Eidtang and German keyboardist Andreas Hack -- who are backed by a drummer and bassist (plus a guest guitar soloist on select tracks). Liquid Stone is the group’s debut record, and it blurs melancholic folk, gentle prog and indie pop into a melodic and atmospheric amalgam of Kate Bush, Lunatic Soul and Eurythmics.
The piano-drenched “Spirals” serves as a definitive opening statement, sweeping and majestic, yet fragile and vulnerable, too. From there, "Hiding in Plain Sight" reveals how Whispers of Granite rocks, while mid-album track "Ocean Maker" finds the band in full-on prog mode.
Heard as a whole, Liquid Stone takes listeners on a surreal musical journey that demands multiple listens -- not only so you can soak everything up but because you might otherwise miss something.
